A Letter from Peter & Ann
updated 21st June 1999

Dear Readers,

Peter and I are both on the mature side of 50, but have no intention of giving-in to the advancing years.

We retired from the rat race 10 years ago to run a 350-acre farm in Perthshire with 350 breeding sheep, 30 suckler cows, and an ever increasing number of horses.

We have now sold the farm livestock and let out most of the farm in order to concentrate on our equestrian related activities.

Peter travelled all over the world in the 20 years he spent as an Irrigation Engineer, designing sprinkler irrigatioon schemes in Africa, the Middle East and Far East and in doing so, turning the desert green. When our daughter was young we spent two fascinating years in Saudi Arabia...Every now and then he has a real yearning to travel again, particularly to desert regions.

As a veterinary surgeon by profession I found it an interesting experience moving to the other side of the fence by becoming a breeder. It was my love of horses from childhood that led me into building up a small stud of Welsh Cobs and Part-breds.

There are numerous reasons why Peter and I are undertaking this crazy challenge. Peter has owned an Austin Healey for 31 years. We always joke that I will have to go before the car! Since reading, many years ago, about the Paris to Peking race of 1907, he has been committed to doing something similar.

When he saw an article about a proposed "Around the World in 80 Days" challenge he was instantly fired up and could think of nothing else.

For myself, I decided that there should be a reason other than pleasure! Apart from the tremendous challenge (I always love a challenge) I felt this was an opportunity to do something for others. We have chosen to support a charity near to home that benefits families all over Scotland, The Children's Hospice Association, Scotland.

I hope that many of you will feel able to give something to help these children and their families.

Yours in speed

Ann
